Internet of Things - Pledge
I, Nova Lie Reilly, pledge from this day of Sunday, Dec 7, 2025, to cease my participation in the Internet of Things going forward. Let this first rebellious purchase
- a tape recorder - be a testament to my commitment.
In doing so, I aim to reclaim air, space, time, focus, and true possession and control over my belongings, my data,
and my information.
This tape recorder will be presented to my daughter for her first birthday, alongside recorded tapes of parents, grad parents, and a great grandmother recording our voices reading stories. Although a new toddler-independence-giving device has been invented – the Yoto Player – with much acclaim, I wanted something instead which had no connected apps to manage or hide from my daughter, and wherin my sentimentally recorded stories in the voices of her relatives would not be owned in any part or way whatsoever by a corporation with the power to flippantly disappear an heirloom, but instead only by our human hearts and hands. The fact that this simple purchase needed to be made with such feeling of rebellion, such internet sleuthing, and such second-guessing what’s right for my family as a consumer, only strengthens my stance on the IoT.
